Therefore, before you install the iOS 12 public beta on your iPhone or iPad, make sure to create its backup. In case you’d want to go back to iOS 11, you can simply restore this backup.
There are two different ways provided for you to backup data with a computer. iTunes and iPhone Data Exporter are two great helpers, allowing you to back up and restore data within a few clicks.
Method 1: Create an Backup in iTunes
Step 1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and launch iTunes.
Step 2. Click on the iPhone icon from the iTunes top menu bar.
Step 3. Tap on “Back Up Now” button. If you want extra security, click on Encrypt Backup. iTunes will begin to create a backup of your iPhone on Mac or computer.
Note: After the process is done, you can check to see if the backup finished successfully by clicking iTunes Preferences > Devices (on a Mac) or Edit > Preferences > Devices (on a PC).
Method 2: Create an Backup via iPhone Data Exporter
iPhone Data Exporter can selectively transfer data from iPhone to a computer for extra security, such as contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, notes, WhatsApp chats and more. You can also view and extract data in iTunes or iCloud backups without restoring the backup to an iOS device.
Step 1. Install and run the program. Then connect iPhone to PC.
Step 2. Select a Backup Mode.
Step 3. Choose data and backup to your computer with a simple click.
Most importantly: No matter which method you use, all you have to do is download the latest iOS 12 public beta. Here’s how to do.
Step 1. Head over to https://beta.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID and accept the terms and conditions of the Apple Beta Software program if this is your first time to visit the Apple Beta Software Program.
Step 2. Tap on Enroll your iOS device > Download profile. Click “Allow” when asking your permission to show the configuration profile.
Step 3. When you see the iOS 12 Beta Software Profile, tap Install and enter your passcode. Follow the on-screen instruction to continue. Once installed, reboot your device for the changes to take effect.
Step 4. After installing the beta profile and restarting your device, navigate to Settings -> General -> Software Update. In here you should see iOS 12 beta.
Step 5. To initiate the download, tap on “Install Now”. After the download is complete and your iPhone reboots one more time, you will officially be running iOS 12.
This method is the most straightforward. However, it has certain drawbacks. E.g,
1. It takes at least 30 minutes to 1 hour + to download and install iOS 12 public beta on your iPhone.
2. This method may result in data loss, so you had better to back up iPhone data before installing. However, the more data stored on your device, the more backup time it takes.
3. The speed of Wi-Fi network affects the installation. If the network is not smooth enough, it takes more time to install.
If you do not want to install the iOS 12 update over the air by downloading directly to your iPhone, you can plug it into iTunes and install iOS 12 public beta through iTunes.
Step 1. Once you’ve downloaded the IPSW file from the previous step, if not, you can download IPSW file of iOS 12 beta from Apple official site.

On an iPhone 6s and older, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold the Home and the Power buttons at the same time for eight seconds. Then release the Power button and keep holding Home button until you see the prompt on iTunes telling you that your iPhone is detected and is in recovery mode.
